See this beautiful, graceful dancer here? She’s an actual ballerina from Russia’s ‘Big Ballet’.
When I was little, in addition to wanting to enter pageants for fun and try modelling, I always wanted to dance ballet. I repeatedly begged to be put in ballet classes. I used to watch ballet performances (and pageants on TV) and mimic what I saw, as ‘practice’. I just wanted to be those pretty, graceful girls I saw on TV and in movies. I thought they were so elegant and graceful.
Want to know why it never happened? It was because every adult who found out about my dreams told me the same thing: “You’re too fat/too short/not pretty enough/it’s only for pretty girls/etc”. Even my parents told me the same thing. Looking back on it now, I realize my parents were protecting me from the cruelty of modelling and pageants and ballet, but it was still messed up to be constantly told I was ugly and fat and too short to do what I wanted to do. The worst part? My prettier cousins were ALWAYS in pageants and the dance classes they wanted to take and one of them even got to model in a clothing advertisement. All the things I wanted to do, but told I couldn’t because of my height and weight and looks. MY compromise was being put in a Hip Hop dance class. I wanted to dance, so I agreed to it, but I wanted to dance BALLET. Total BS.
Imagine how annoyed and pissed off I was when at age 13 or 14, after I’d given up on trying to model and enter pageants and dance ballet, that I was attending my younger cousin’s dance recital, and there was a fat girl, as part of another group, dancing ballet. She moved just as gracefully as the tall and skinny girls I was always told were only allowed to dance ballet.
Know what’s even more messed up? To this day, years later, I realize I’m still hurt by that.
